Good News
Today a Dutch newspaper (NRC) presented the finding of an older version of Genesis. In the Ugaritic language, a western Semitic language, related to hebrew. A story was discovered that gave a different version of one of the oldest tales of good and evil. As some of the links on this Homepage will suggest, religion and its origin have always fascinated me. So every now and then there is what I consider to be good news. Like when the Qumran scrolls were found and there appeared a new image of New Testamental Christianity. This new image was also one of dissapointment for it also showed where people and their laws can go wrong. But hey, that’s my opinion.
What is the good news here? Well first of all Adam is not the dumb ass tempted by a treacherous female. This female, Eve, is not of his rib, I think, and she is basically a good woman.
Adam is a God, deceived by Evil that takes the form of a snake. This snake poisons the Tree of Life. The venom causes him to become mortal. Then appears the Sungod who gives him Eve, and eternal life for their offspring. If we look closer to this Sungod, I wonder how close we come to Osiris and Egypt, and of course to that other individual, sometimes referred to as the Sungod. I’m certainly looking out for the book “Adam, Eve and the Devil” by Marjo Korpel and Johannes de Moor of the Protestant Theological University in Amsterdam.
